The PAPEP exports its methodology to other regions of the world

The Political Analysis and Prospective Scenarios Project (PAPEP) presented its methodology in the Regional Workshop for Asia and the Pacific called “Political-Economic Analysis for the UNDP: Approaches and Methodology”.

The workshop took place in June in Bangkok, Thailand, as an inter-bureau initiative co-organized by the Regional Bureau for Asia and the Pacific (RBAP), The Oslo Governance Center (DGG/BDP), the Regional Political Analysis and Prospective Scenarios Project (PAPEP/RBLAC) and the Center for Learning Resources (OHR/BOM), with the participation of about 80 UNDP officials from different countries in the Asia Pacific region, who in the course of five days learned different successful methodologies from other parts of the world.

As of 2010 a UNDP work team was called on by the Democratic Governance Group (DGG) and the Bureau of Development Policies (BDP), to explore the different ways in which political-economic analyses can offer support to UNDP’s mandate and interventions in different countries.  Starting from this, the Oslo Governance Center (OGC), allied with the Bureau for Crisis Prevention and Recovery (BCPR) to achieve a UNDP rapprochement on this type of analysis.  In consequence, the OGC has generated an alliance with the Regional Bureau for Latin America and the Caribbean) (RBLAC), so as to present and eventually apply the PAPEP methodology to other regions of the world.  The PAPEP methodology was conceived by the UNDP Bolivia team at the beginning of the twenty-first century, and implemented in Latin America for more than ten years of work in more 16 countries in the region with different successful experiences.  The studies have been centered in political analysis for development, representing a strong tool for crisis prevention, promotion of democratic dialogue and strategic political advisory.

The purpose of the Bangkok workshop was to respond to the diverse challenges for democracy and democratic governability that are being faced at present in different regions of the world, attempting to replicate the PAPEP’s success in the Latin American region.

PAPEP’s participation in the workshop, and above all, the interest that has been generated in UNDP officials in other regions, has shown the potential for applying its methodology in other regions. This was reflected in the interest of the participants in counting on this type of methodology in their respective countries.
